The Intermediate State: With Christ, Yet Awaiting Fulfillment
Seven passages on the conscious intermediate state between bodily death and the final resurrection. This series treats the deuterocanonical books as inspired Scripture in accordance with the Catholic canon. Purgatory is not a second chance, a third final destination, or an additional sacrifice beyond the Cross. It is the final purification of the saved.

RSV-CE excerpt
Which interpretation best accounts for this passage?
Read it with the rest of Scripture
A sound interpretation must preserve the whole biblical pattern: Christ’s sacrifice is finished, the saved are truly forgiven and with him, judgment follows death, prayer for the dead is scriptural, and nothing unclean enters heaven.
Catholic synthesis
Christ’s sacrifice is once for all and completely sufficient. The saved are judged after death and belong to Christ; purgatory is neither condemnation nor a second chance. It is the final application of Christ’s sanctifying grace so that those destined for heaven are actually made perfectly holy, while the prayers of the Church can assist the faithful departed as Scripture explicitly shows in 2 Maccabees 12.
