Faith & Life Grade 8 · Chapter 9 · Mary, Mother of the Church
Mary, Ark of the New Covenant
The Ark of the Covenant was the holiest object in Israel: the place of God’s presence. Luke tells the story of Mary’s visit to Elizabeth in a way that deliberately echoes King David bringing the Ark to Jerusalem (2 Samuel 6). The Fathers saw Mary as the living Ark.
Explore the idea
Select a detail about the Ark, then choose its fulfillment in the New Testament. Read 2 Samuel 6 and Luke 1:39-56 side by side if time allows.

Discuss the connection
Why do you think Luke wrote his story to remind readers of the Ark? How should we treat the One whom Mary carried, now present in the Eucharist?
